Pupils need right to appeal - MHK

An MHK says new legislation which would give school detentions a legal standing in the Isle of Man contains a significant flaw.

The Department of Education has unveiled its plans for getting tough on disruptive pupils, but Rushen MHK Quintin Gill is drawing attention to what he sees as an oversight.

Mr Gill (pictured) says the proposed law relating to detentions doesn't give pupils the right to appeal.

He told Manx Radio:

"That right to appeal, where there is a fundamental issue of detention, is contrary to natural justice.

"I want the department to comfort myself and, hopefully, the House that they have considered that and they will bring in guidelines to reflect that."
