Thirty-four-year old admits unlawful possession and introducting articles to prison

A court's heard how a prisoner tried to smuggle drugs into Isle of Man Prison because of his addiction.

Thirty-four-year-old Ross James Patrick Mcwhinnie appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes this week.

Mcwhinnie was arrested on 23 January after failing a number urine tests.

He'd been out on licence after serving part of an eight-year sentence for being involved in the production of £30,000 worth of cocaine in 2011.

Soon after he arrived at the prison, Mcwhinnie became unwell and was taken to Noble's Hospital.

It was discovered he'd hidden 40 grams of cannabis resin in his anal passage - along with more than £85 worth of cannabis bush.

His advocate said he did this due to having a heavy dependence on the substance - using up to two ounces of resin a month.

The two packages containing the drugs were seized the next day.

Mcwhinnie entered guilty pleas to two counts of unlawful possession of cannabis and one count of introducing articles to prison.

Mrs Hughes has committed the case to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing on 24 February.

He's been remanded in custody until then.
