Prison and lengthy ban for drink-driver

A 66 year-old man has been jailed for a total of three months for drink-driving.

John Frederick Eastham of Main Road, Colby admitted the offence, as well as driving while disqualified and without insurance.

He was arrested in Colby at 2.10pm on October 7 by police who had seen a car being driven erratically.

Samples showed a blood-alcohol reading of 269 milligrammes, compared with the legal limit of 80.

The court heard the defendant had previously been banned from driving in 2002 and had failed to re-take his driving test and undergo a drug and alcohol course, both of which he had been ordered to do.

Eastham's advocate said his client had a long-standing problem with alcohol abuse.

In addition to the prison sentence, he was disqualified from driving for seven years.
