President's tribute to artist

Friends, colleagues and students of Manx artist Norman Sayle are hailing the contribution of one of the great watercolourists of our time.

Norman Sayle, who has died at the age of 80, inspired generations of students during his long career at the Isle of Man College, spanning more than three decades.

He went on to become a prolific artist, painting landscapes both in the Island and the Mediterranean.

Former Director of the British Museum Sir David Wilson, was a lifelong friend and says he was a master of painting in watercolour.

Shortly before his death Mr Sayle received the first ever Tynwald Medal of Honour, for his outstanding contribution to Manx society.

The presentation was made by President of Tynwald Noel Cringle, who got to know him well in his later years.

Mr Cringle says the artist's interest in helping others will be among his chief legacies:
