Plans for wave overtopping defences on Douglas Promenade

DOI seeking permission for 180m-long reinforced concrete structure

Plans to build new wave overtopping defences on Douglas Promenade have now been submitted to planning officials.

The Department of Infrastructure is seeking permission to build the 180m-long reinforced concrete structure.

If approved, the sea wall would run from the slipway at the Sea Terminal to a point opposite the start of the Sunken Gardens.

The DOI says it would be 1.2-metres high so people can see over the top and out to sea.

It would also be built to allow a further 0.6m to be added to the wall if needed in future.

Certain features would also be added to 'soften its visual impact' on the area.

A separate planning proposal for a 500m-long sea defence from the War Memorial to the Empress Hotel was approved back in May 2020.

The DOI adds, if their latest application is given the green light it's hoped both projects could be started 'in the near future'.

The application is now pending consideration.
