Permission given for Peel silt dump site

CoMin gives DoI green light

The Council of Ministers has given the Department of Infrastructure permission to use a site on the outskirts of Peel to dump contaminated silt dredged from Peel Harbour.

The department had applied retrospectively for permission after trucks began delivering the silt to the Poortown Road site following an operation to clear Peel marina.

It’s now been confirmed the department will be allowed to use the site for five years and will have to make sure there’s no threat from heavy metals leaching into surrounding land.

The decision from CoMin is final, and while objectors can’t appeal, they may be able to challenge the decision in court.
