People urged to be responsible around Point of Ayre nesting birds

Police warn disturbing the animals can carry penalty up to £10,000

Residents and their pets are being urged to be responsible around nesting birds at the Point of Ayre.

Arctic Terns, Ringed Plover and Oystercatchers will be frequenting the area in the coming months - while all birds, nests and eggs are legally protected, the first two of those species have additional protection from disturbance whilst nesting and rearing their young.

Fences have now been built in the area to protect the wildlife - Police are reminding people not to enter fenced-off areas and dogs must be kept on leads there until 30 August.

The constabulary adds it's an offence to take pictures of Terns if the animal is disturbed and attacks and can carry a penalty of up to £10,000.

Anyone who witnesses irresponsible behaviour in the area can contact Ramsey Police Station on 812 234 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
