Pensioner caught driving all-terrain buggy while banned

Ballasalla man pleaded guilty at Douglas courthouse

A Ballasalla pensioner who was banned from the roads for drink-driving was caught driving an all-terrain vehicle which needed a full licence.

Sixty-nine-year-old William Henry Cubbon of Crossag Road appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and having no vehicle insurance on 24 January.

Prosecution advocate James Robinson told the hearing Cubbon had been banned from the roads in 2014 but had never retaken his test after applying for a provisional licence.

At around 10.30am on 24 January he was stopped driving a Polaris Ranger on Mill Road in Ballasalla.

He became defensive when asked about the vehicle, saying he’d been driving it for four years after an Island dealer told him it didn't need a full licence.

However, it did – and his ban meant the insurance policy on the £9,000 buggy was invalid.

After hearing he'd sworn at police when the vehicle was seized, Mrs Hughes fined him £1,000 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £50.

She also imposed six points on his licence.
