Peel Sewage Treatment Works 'important and massively overdue', says MHK

Area MHKs comment on images shared of Peel Beach

The establishment of a Sewage Treatment Works in the West of the Island is 'important and massively overdue'.

That's according to Glenfaba and Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan, who was commenting on a social media post which garnered attention online yesterday (Saturday 10 February).

Several photographs were shared in a western community group, showing what was assumed to be raw sewage, toilet paper and other sanitary items washed up on Peel Beach.

The administrator on 'People of Peel' stated the 'concerning' images and videos were captured at around 12pm, during the incoming tide.

A planning application from Manx Utilities for a proposed facility is currently working its way through the Major Applications Process.

Commenting on the post, Glenfaba and Peel MHK Tim Crookall said: "All being well two years from now we’ll have no raw sewage going out to sea."

Ms Lord-Brennan added: "The planning application has had a lot of extra pre-application work with DEFA through something called a Major Applications Process which aims to identify and solve issues if possible before an application goes in (to reduce risk and make sure key work done and ready). 

"That was introduced by this current government and Council of Ministers have also been keeping an eye on progress because it is known how important and massively overdue it is.

"Understand Commissioners are supportive of the site etc too."
