Pandemic has negative impact on measuring marine life

Reports dwindling due to social distancing measures

The outbreak of coronavirus is having an impact on local marine life charity Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch.

The organisation has regularly tracked sea mammal life around the Island's coast in the past, recording the numbers and types of species visiting.

However, the self-isolation and social distancing regulations in place are causing 'extreme difficulties' for monitoring local populations of dolphins, whales and porpoises.

So far, 25 people have tested positive for the Covid-19 virus - with only one in acute care and the rest self-isolating in the community.

Despite this, volunteers are still urging residents to keep an eye on Manx waters during their daily walk or outing after a number of Rissos and Bottlenose dolphins have been spotted earlier this month.

Any sightings can be reported to the Manx Whale and Dolphin Watch website.
