Ousted Councillor is new Mayor

Dorothy Pitts, who was ousted from her seat on Douglas council in last month’s local authority elections, has been confirmed as the town’s next mayor.

Councillors met in private last Thursday to discuss the issue after Mrs Pitts was defeated by Liberal Vannin candidate Sara Hackman.

They were told the unusual situation meant they needed to either rescind or re-affirm their decision.

Also up for grabs at the meeting was the position of council leader.

Jason Roberts reports.

Councillors were told they could either confirm Mrs Pitts appointment as mayor for the 2008 to 2009 municipal year or choose somebody else for the post.

But minutes of the meeting show the council resolved to re-affirm Mrs Pitts appointment.

Last year’s council leader David Christian has been elected back to the post after being voted in by 17 to one.

Only Councillor Colin Cain voted against Mr Christian’s leadership.
