One-stop shop for independent living

Disabled people in the Isle of Man can now try out the latest in home living aids and equipment, in one place.

The Island's first Independent Living Centre has been officially opened, at the Central Community Health Centre in Westmoreland Road, Douglas.

Health Service staff will demonstrate how specially adapted equipment can help with daily tasks, such as preparing meals, showering and getting upstairs.

Although the equipment isn't on sale at the centre, it offers people of all ages, and with different disabilities, a chance to try out a wide range of items without any pressure.

Advice is also available on costs and local suppliers.

Lynne Ansell from Occupational Therapy Services says it's a one-stop shop (first part of audio file):

The Independent Living Centre is jointly funded by the Department of Health and the Department of Social Care.

Minister for Social Care Martyn Quayle says it's aimed at helping people stay in their own homes for as long as possible (second part of audio file):

The Independent Living Centre will be open on the first Wednesday of each month and no appointment is needed.

Alternatively, appointments can be made, by ringing 642561.
