New member of LegCo elected

Large margin win for Jane Poole Wilson

Solicitor Jane Poole-Wilson has been elected to Legislative Council, the Manx parliament's upper house.

Mrs Poole-Wilson was nominated by Garff MHK Daphne Caine and seconded by Middle member Bill Shimmins.

She replaces Tony Wild, who stood down on grounds of ill health, and will serve until February 2018.

Her election today (18 May) at a special sitting of the House of Keys, was conducted under a reformed regime of voting.

Jane Poole-Wilson attracted 14 votes - a straightforward majority of those present and voting (24).

Former police officer Alan Wright was second with six votes, just ahead of advocate Paul Beckett on five.

A separate electronic vote was held for each candidate in turn, with results not declared until votes on all three were complete.

MHKs were required to vote for or against each candidate, no abstentions were allowed. Chris Thomas and Ann Corlett voted against all three candidates.

In theory, MHKs could vote for more than one candidate, despite the single vacancy.

Details of MHKs' votes will be released later today - the public vote replacing a secret ballot for the first time in LegCo's history.
