Chief Minister Allan Bell says the member of Tynwald who has been thrown into the centre of public sector pay negoatiations may be inexperienced in mainstream political terms, but is well versed in the jobs market.
The Manx government officially has a pay freeze, and the man who has to deal with some potentially difficult pay negotiations is the new MHK for Michael, Alf Cannan.
Mr Bell has backed Mr Cannan's judgement by giving him the role of chairman of Whitley Council, the pay negotiating body for the Island's public sector manual workers:
