New airport security area opens

Works still underway at Ronaldsway

The first phase of a major security overhaul at Ronaldsway Airport is complete.

The Department of Infrastructure announced the project in February, after complaints about lengthy queues into the departure lounge.

Increases in passenger numbers, bigger aircraft and passengers leaving check-in until last minute have all been blamed for long waits in the security line over recent months.

But there was public outcry last year, when it emerged only one of the airport's two security scanners was in use most of the time.

The Department of Infrastructure put £300,000 aside for an extension and refurbishment of the security area.

That's now been completed, and passengers traveling through the terminal can access the departure lounge via a new entrance on the first floor.

The next phase of the works will see an automatic tray return system and electronic boarding card scanners installed, and five extra security staff taken on.

Some passengers have already taken to social media to complain there's been no improvement - but airport bosses say the works are still underway, and have thanked the public for their patience.
