Gunner killed on cargo ship 'Mary Baird' in 1917

100 years ago today - a Manx gunner was killed when his ship hit a mine off the Cornish coast.

Cargo ship 'Mary Baird' carried 37-year-old Douglas man William Henry Clucas of the Royal Naval Reserves - who was working between Newport in South Wales and Rouen in France when it floundered.

He was one of seven men to lose their lives when it was hit by falling debris.

Pat Owers is his Granddaughter - she's just discovered his final letter.
