More than 130 dead birds found at the Point of Ayre

DEFA confirms they died of avian influenza

More than 130 dead and distressed birds have been found at the Point of Ayre.

The great majority of the birds found were Greylag Geese.

Neil Morris from the Manx Birdlife charity counted the birds this weekend and reported the high number to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

The charity has announced that, as a result, their Point of Ayre reserve will be closed to all visitors until further notice.

Government’s chief vet has confirmed to Manx Radio that, following tests, DEFA can confirm they died of highly pathogenic avian influenza.
