MHK claims his constituent was 'denied' antiviral drug

Wannenburgh puts allegation to health minister

A Douglas North MHK has claimed one of his constituents was denied antiviral drugs for Covid-19 despite having invasive breast cancer.

John Wannenburgh quizzed the health and social care minister, this week, about issues with supply of the new medication and the measures being taken to address those concerns.

Manx Care started offering antiviral medication on 31 March – in either intravenous or tablet form – after agreement was reached with the UK for 94 patient courses.

It followed a delay of over a month due to supply issues from the manufacturer and competing demands from 'home nations and crown dependencies'.

Antiviral medication is available to patients who are deemed at greatest risk of becoming seriously ill with the virus and who have been deemed eligible for it by their GP.

Eligibility guidance was determined by the UK Department of Health and Social Care.

However in the House of Keys Mr Wannenburgh told Lawrie Hooper that his constituent had not been given access to the medication despite having completed surgery and chemotherapy:

In a statement on Facebook Mr Wannenburgh said his patient had consulted with her medical team in the UK and on Island and was told by her GP that 'there were no antivirals'.
