Man who tried to intervene in arrest is spared jail

20-year-old was drunk and disorderly

A drunken Port St Mary man who got involved when police officers arrested his friend has been spared jail.

Twenty-year-old Eoghan Thewlis, of Fistard Road, admitted being drunk and disorderly during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The court heard officers had arrested a man on Station Road, in Port Erin, at around 11pm.

As they tried to take the man into custody Thewlis, who was slurring his words and unsteady on his feet, tried to grab his arm and speak to him.

Officers repeatedly told him to stay away but Thewlis refused – and threatened a group of men who were watching the incident.

The court heard Thewlis had been given a suspended jail term earlier this year for drugs offences and was worried he would be sent to prison for his latest offence.

Magistrates said they wouldn't activate that sentence but fined him £400 and ordered him to pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
