Man who threatened to send drugs to ex-partner's home avoids jail

26-year-old sentenced for domestic abuse

A Ramsey man who threatened to send drugs to his ex-partner’s home so that she’d lose custody of their daughter has avoided jail.

Conor Robert Ryan Maguire, of Waterloo Road, entered the woman’s home – uninvited – at 10.30pm on 15 August.

He refused to leave and began making threats before locking her out of the property whilst the child cried upstairs; the 26-year-old then picked up a knife, and potato peeler, and pointed them at her.

He was arrested and later pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse offence.

During sentencing, at Douglas Courthouse, Maguire’s advocate said his client had suffered a ‘breakdown in his mental health’ adding he was struggling to accept the relationship was over.

“In effect he wasn’t thinking straight,” the advocate added.

The almost six weeks Maguire had spent on remand at the Isle of Man Prison, he said, had been a ‘stark wakeup call’.

Maguire was also sentenced for driving offences, committed on 11 September, including drink driving, having no insurance or licence, failing to stop for police and taking a vehicle without consent.

Sentencing him to 17 weeks in custody, suspended for 18 months, Magistrates also imposed an 18 month Suspended Sentence Supervision Order.

He was also disqualified him from driving for two years and until he’s taken and passed an extended driving test.
