Man fined for sending offensive Facebook messages

Carl Adrian Shewring sent malicious messages on social media

A Douglas man's been fined after using Facebook to send offensive messages to a woman.

Twenty-two-year-old Carl Adrian Shewring of Peel Road appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to sending malicious messages over the Island’s telecoms network on 11 July.

Prosecution advocate Roger Kane told the hearing Shewring had been friends with the woman but had fallen out with her boyfriend.

On the day in question, he repeatedly sent foul-mouthed abuse and insults to her via Facebook Messenger.

He also called her through the social media platform but she rejected the call.

Later, he commented on a post she'd made, swearing and accusing her boyfriend of being a police informer.

Calling the offence “unpleasant” and “unnecessary”, Mrs Hughes fined him £200 and ordered him to pay £125 towards prosecution costs.
