By election sees Malarkey return to Keys and a new career in politics for Peake

Two new members of the House of Keys have been elected tonight in by elections in Douglas North and South.

Businessman Ralph Peake topped the poll in Douglas North with 604 votes, 50 ahead of David Ashford in second place.

Maire Booth finished third, with 223 votes.

A total of 1,387 votes were cast, a turn out of 39.8%.

It's the start of a political career for Mr Peake, who enters the Keys with more than two decades experience running his own business behind him, but no track record in politics.

In Douglas South however, Bill Malarkey made a return to politics.

He topped the poll with 598 votes, 96 more than his nearest rival Keith Fitton.

Amy Burns finished in third place with 273 votes, while Kurt Buchholz attracted 164.

Just over 40% of eligible voters went to the polls, a total of 1,551.

Mr Malarkey was voted into the Keys at the general election in 2006, but lost the seat in 2011.

He was subsequently elected to Douglas Borough Council but made no secret he had his eye on returning to national politics.

There were cheers among Mr Malarkey's supporters at the count in Scoill Vallajeelt as he emerged the victor:
