Island still safest place in British Isles but there are issues

Chief Constable's Annual Report debated in Tynwald

MHKs are debating the Chief Constable's Annual Report in Tynwald.

Gary Roberts' final report has been presented to the court this morning by the Home Affairs minister.

As Manx Radio has reported previously the Isle of Man remains the safest place to live in the British Isles according to police here.

Recorded crime has fallen by six per cent in the last year with the overall detection rate at 46 per cent.

Tynwald members have thanked Mr Roberts for his near decade of service in the role.

They are also highlighting some of the issues presented in the report which the Island's police have to contend with.

Many are drawing attention to statistics around young offenders - 224 young people were responsible for almost 700 offences in the last year.

MLC Bill Henderson said drug culture in particular is threatening our young people:

Douglas South MHK Claire Christian has drawn attention to the 18 per cent increase in sexual assault offences:

Kerry Sharpe MLC spoke in her role as children's champion raising questions around support for young people leaving care services in the Island and the current lack of a Youth Justice Team:

Garff MHK Daphne Caine also criticised "political cost-cutting" which she says has a direct impact on crime:

Minister Jane Poole-Wilson is now giving her reply.

Tynwald is still sitting and you can listen live via Manx Radio AM 1368.
