Huge response to ports ID check survey

Majority of respondents in favour of move

It seems people in the Isle of Man are broadly in favour of introducing ID checks for ferry travel.

Almost 1,000 people responded to the online survey, with a further 117 making submissions via email, letter or telephone.

Of the online respondents, just shy of 58 per cent agreed the possibility of people coming to the Island under a false name to evade detection for criminal offences justified such checks - just over 38 percent thought it didn't.

There were concerns about how such measures could be implemented for coach parties travelling on the Steam Packet, cruise ship passengers, or people coming here on small, private vessels.

Thirty-five per cent of online respondents thought the checks could have a significant negative impact on passenger numbers - just over 55 per cent thought it wouldn't.
