Horse neglect results in a fine for Douglas woman

Farrier said animal's hooves were the worst he'd seen

A former MSPCA worker from Douglas has been fined after she neglected a horse – but hasn’t been banned from keeping animals.

Sixty-eight-year-old Jennifer Ann Corran, of Ballaughton, admitted causing animal suffering when she appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

Prosecution advocate Rachael Braidwood told the hearing Corran kept three horses in a field in St John’s including a male thoroughbred called Ben.

But when she asked a farrier to trim Ben’s hooves, the man said he was shocked by the animal’s state.

The farrier said the hooves were in the worst condition he’d ever seen – the horse was lame and had obviously been suffering for some time.

Corran, a former animal welfare officer who’d worked with horses for more than 40 years, admitted allowing the animal to suffer between November 2018 and April this year.

The court heard one of the horse’s hooves had broken in two, and a vet told the court a cavity he’d found in its foot could have led to an infection which seriously endangered its life.

Magistrates fined Corran £500 and ordered her to pay £50 towards prosecution costs – but didn’t impose a ban after hearing her other animals were well looked-after.
