Mills man takes car after seeing keys in ignition

A Union Mills man has pleaded guilty to taking a vehicle without consent – after keys were left in the ignition.

Forty-two-year-old Lee Simon Crawley drove the car to Douglas in an attempt to board a Ben-My-Chree journey to Heysham.

At around 8.45am on 13 January, Crawley saw the black VW Golf on Snugborough Avenue with its engine on and no one inside.

The owner of the car had gone into his house briefly to collect his daughter and take her to school.

Upon returning to the vehicle, he saw Crawley performing a turn in the road and drive off at speed.

After a short-lived chase on foot, the complainant dialled 999 and the car was later located at the Sea Terminal.

Crawley denied trying to steal the Golf and told officers he needed to get to England.

He also admitted having no licence or insurance.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes has adjourned the case until 21 March.
