IoM Green Party worried by Government's decision
The Isle of Man Green Party says it is 'deeply concerned' a company has been given the go-ahead to prospect for hydrocarbons by the Manx government.
Yesterday (15 Oct), it was announced Crogga will begin surveying for gas and oil eight miles off the coast of Maughold Head.
Responding to the move, the Manx Greens said the decision risks damage to the Island's reputation as a UNESCO biosphere nation.
'The IPCC report shows categorically that the Isle of Man must shift to a carbon free energy system. It [the decision] has provided an indication to industry to invest in energy processes that are immediately damaging to our environment'
The Isle of Man Green Party is concerned that the government statement 'it will be at no cost to the Isle of Man Government', does not take any account of the climate costs of extracting and burning fossil fuels.
Along with a negative impact to the Island's marine ecosystems, they say it also undermines Tynwald's 80% reduction of CO2 emissions by 2050.
