A flood warning for large parts of the Island's eastern coastline has tonight been issued (2 Jan).
Strong winds combined with an exceptionally high tide are expected to cause substantial flooding, with parts of Douglas, Ramsey and Castletown most at risk.
Emergency planning chiefs are preparing to close a number of roads including the entire length of Douglas Promenade seaward side and around harbours between 11am and 3pm, with high tide due at 1230pm.
A map outlining areas likely to flood based on current weather forecasts will be posted by the Department of Infrastructure on the Manx government website tonight at www.gov.im.
Earlier, the Met Office warned of severe gale force winds gusting up to 70 miles per hour on Friday, presenting a danger to both property and people as debris is thrown over sea walls before and after high tide.
The Steam Packet Company has cancelled Thursday evening's ferry crossing to Heysham and the overnight return. A decision on Friday's scheduled 8.45am sailing will be made by 7am.
The flooding is expected to be as severe as that last seen in the Isle of Man more than a decade ago, in 2002.
