Five-year ban for drink driver who was almost three times over limit

37-year-old was heading to garage in early hours of morning

A Douglas woman has been banned from the roads for five years after being caught drink driving in the early hours of the morning.

Police stopped Clodagh Hansen on Peel Road at 3.41am, on 10 August, because she didn’t have her headlights on.

The 37-year-old, of Douglas Avenue, told officers she was on the way to the 24-hour garage – but they noted she was nervous, her speech was slurred and she smelt of intoxicants.

Hansen failed a roadside breath test and was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters where further tests showed she was almost three times over the legal limit.

At Douglas Courthouse her advocate told the court she had succumbed to ‘pressure and strain’ in her private life adding: “Unfortunately Miss Hansen turned to alcohol as a crutch.”

Describing her as ‘entirely remorseful’ he described her offending as ‘out of character, irresponsible behaviour’.

“She is extremely remorseful for her conduct.”  - Jim Travers (advocate)

Magistrates also imposed a 12-month probation order telling Hansen: “Clearly this has been a large error of judgement on your behalf.”

She must also pay £125 in prosecution costs.
