Fire crews attend bus fire

Fire crews had to attend an unusual incident last night (Thurs) after a bus caught fire.

The call out came around 11.30 following reports that the bus, which had left Ramsey heading to Douglas via Laxey, had caught light after its engine overheated.

Crews found the vehicle close to the Rest and Be Thankful and discovered that whilst the fire was largely confined to the engine compartment at the rear of the vehicle, it was spreading to the passenger area.

All the passengers and the driver had left the vehicle and were unharmed.

Fire crews using breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze and remained at the scene for around an hour to ensure the bodywork of the vehicle and its interior was sufficiently cool to prevent re-ignition.

Police had to close the road for a time until the bus could be removed and the passengers were taken on their way by another bus.

Department of Infrastructure engineers were also called to the scene to inspect the road surface to ensure the fire had not damaged it.
