Fine for teenagers involved in ‘reckless’ street fight

But other four involved escape with Bind Over Orders

Two teenagers from Douglas have been fined for their part in a street fight which saw four others escape with a promise to display good behaviour.

Tom Noble, of Devonshire Road, and Talat Cemal Kilic, of Queens Promenade, were part of a six-man incident on 16 January.

The 19-year-olds admitted affray after police were called to Douglas Promenade at 1.18am – one of the officers witnessed Kilic kick another man in the head.

All six men were arrested and charged after the incident, which had started in a nearby bar, which the prosecutor described as a ‘large and reckless fight’.

However, at Douglas Courthouse, she admitted that the other four men had been handed Bind Over Orders which simply require them to keep the peace.

Noble’s advocate told the court he was ‘confused’ saying he didn’t understand why the men were being treated differently for the ‘regrettable incident’.

It was a view shared by Kilic’s advocate who said her client had been left with a ‘sour taste’ of the criminal justice system adding it sent a message that it was not advisable to enter early guilty pleas.

Describing Kilic’s actions as ‘self-defence gone too far’ she added: “He’s never been in a fight in his life – not even in the school playground!”

Admitting that the difference in approach to punishment was ‘odd’ Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks said: “I cannot close my eyes (to the fact) that the others were dealt with in the way they were.”

However he said the two teenagers had accepted their criminality by pleading guilty and described their behaviour as ‘unnerving’ for anyone who’d witnessed it.

Both men were fined £500 and have to pay prosecution costs of £125.

Deputy High Bailiff Brooks added: "I do hope - and I do think - that I will never see either of you in court again."
