Endoscopy report critical of service's policies

Eight issues rated as high risk following investigation

A review into endoscopy on the Island has criticised a number of areas of the service.

MIAA Advisory Services carried out an independent investigation into the corporate arrangements, systems and processes last year, submitting its report to the Department of Health and Social Care in March.

Health Minister David Ashford pledged to publish the report at last week's sitting of the House of Keys following a query from Onchan MHK Julie Edge.

11 issues were found by the review, eight of which were judged to pose a high risk, including waiting times and demand exceeding capacity.

Clinical and non-clinical staff were spoken to as part of the investigation, with some claiming they felt the service was designed around finance rather than quality of care.

The service's policies, protocols and procedures were described as incomplete, and the report states there is evidence to suggest the health service knew the endoscopy department was struggling.

Some patients are being booked ahead as far as 2023, while two-week cancer referrals were taking as long as eight weeks as of June last year.

Demand for endoscopy procedures on the Island has increased by 85% over the last decade.
