Duo charged with having replica firearm at Sea Terminal

Arrest is thought to be part of Operation Strongbox

A man and a woman have appeared in court facing charges of having a replica firearm at the Sea Terminal.

Natasha Hayley Madden, aged 22, and 28-year-old Ashley Nicolas Stewart appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.

The duo, from Demesne Road in Douglas, haven't yet entered pleas to charges of possessing a regulated weapon and having an imitation gun on Sunday, 27 June.

Prosecution advocate Hazel Carroon told the hearing police officers stopped the couple as they arrived in Douglas on the Ben-my-Chree at around 6pm.

Inside the boot of their blue BMW officers discovered an air pistol shaped like a Colt M1911 automatic handgun.

The arrest is believed to be the first made under Operation Strongbox which sees heightened police vigilance as the Island's border restrictions ease.

Both applied for bail but magistrates turned down the applications.

They remanded the pair in custody until their next court appearance on July 6.
