Drink driver caught after running red light

Police noted 52-year-old's 'confused and unusual' behaviour

A Douglas woman has been banned from the road for two years after being caught running a red light after drinking.

Ewa Anna Lukasik, of Peel Road, admitted being over the drink drive limit on 11 June.

The 52-year-old was stopped by police in Hutchinson Square, just before 1.30am, after officers saw her fail to stop at the lights on York Road.

They were concerned by her ‘confused and unusual’ behaviour and gave the Polish woman several opportunities to provide a roadside breath test – even using Google translate to try and help.

They formed the opinion that she was being obstructive and that language was not a barrier; after being arrested she was taken to Police Headquarters where a blood test was taken.

During sentencing at Douglas Courthouse Lukasik’s advocate told the court she’d been ‘struggling’ with a range of issues adding: “She is, shall we say, mortified and contrite.”

Fining her £1,000, and disqualifying her from driving until she’s served her ban and taken an extended driving test, Magistrates told her: “You obviously made a serious misjudgement.”

Lukasik must also pay prosecution costs of £125.
