Plans submitted to transform shopping streets
Work on the final phase of the regeneration of Douglas town centre looks set to inch a step closer.
Officials at the Department of Infrastructure (DOI) have lodged a planning application to continue the transformation of the capital's main shopping streets.
Market Hill, Lord Street, Chapel Row and James Street are set for a makeover, akin to the street paving regeneration work that's been completed so far.
There had been criticism over proposed pedestrianisation near Market Hill by the owners of the Manx Legion Club, who were concerned elderly and disabled customers would face difficulty getting to the premises.
The DOI has included plans to pedestrianise part of James Street - through traffic will be kept elsewhere, as well as the 30-minute street parking spaces.
In its plans, the department calls the existing carriageways 'dull and downtrodden, with barely adequate street lighting'.
The same material will be used for these areas as the Castle Street scheme, with a red coloured tarmac chosen to match the regenerated North Quay.
Several features have been included for four cycle stands outside the market hall on the pedestrianised section, improved lighting, and a water drinking fountain on James Street.
