Douglas man jailed following fight with friend

Victim pushed to ground and kicked in chest

A man whose play fight with a friend turned serious in front of horrified onlookers has been jailed.

Thirty-year-old Shaun David Bignall of Empire Terrace in Douglas appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to using provoking behaviour on 8 August on Station Road in Port Erin.

The court heard he'd been drinking for 24 hours before the incident, despite being banned from entering licensed premises or buying alcohol.

The hearing was told Bignall, who was serving a suspended jail term at the time, kicked his victim after pushing him to the ground.

One kick was so hard it left a footprint on the man's chest.

Mrs Hughes told him only an immediate custodial sentence was appropriate, and activated all 20 weeks of his suspended jail term.

He was jailed for an extra 10 weeks for provoking behaviour and Mrs Hughes imposed a concurrent 32 days in prison for fines and compensation he owed from previous offences.
