Douglas man fined over drunken incident

Twenty-one-year-old was shouting and swearing at officers

A Douglas man who told magistrates he had no way to pay a fine for being drunk and disorderly has been told if he can afford alcohol, he can pay a financial penalty.

Twenty-one-year-old Mario Rui Martins Vieira of Crosby Terrace appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly on Strand Street in Douglas on 14 July.

Prosecution advocate Rachael Braidwood told the hearing Vieira had been drinking in O'Donnell’s pub at around 11pm when a disturbance broke out.

Although unemployed Vieira wasn't involved in the incident, bar staff asked him to leave but he began arguing as he had a full drink.

When police officers arrived, he was shouting and swearing and refused to leave, so officers arrested him.

Vieria's advocate told the court his client had been working in construction but was currently unemployed and hadn't lived on the Island long enough to claim benefits.

But the bench told him unless he paid a £275 fine as well as £300 costs at the rate of £10 per week, he'd have to serve 30 days in prison.
