Douglas man admits bomb hoax

Call for help from ill man says advocate

A Douglas man has pleaded guilty to a charge of falsely giving a hoax bomb alert.

Forty-nine-year-old Thomas Paul Groom, of Fairfield Terrace, admitted the offence when he appeared before Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

The court heard he had called 999 on the evening of 12 January, telling officers he wanted to commit suicide and 'take someone with him'.

The police went round to see Groom, but he wouldn't let them in initially.

The court heard officers thought he sounded drunk, and told them he had a bomb, which he would use to 'raze the place to the ground'.

They went in and arrested him, but couldn't find any explosive device.

Groom's advocate said the threat had been made by a drunk man with mental health issues, describing the call as a 'cry for help'.

He'll remain in custody until his next appearance at court on 19 February, by which time reports are expected to have been prepared.
