Disqualification for driver who was double the drug limit

Police could smell cannabis in Ford Focus

A motorist from Douglas has been banned from the road for two years after admitting drug driving.

Ben Michael Kelly, of Farmhill Park, was stopped by police in St Marks just after 11pm on 13 August last year.

They could smell cannabis coming from his Ford Focus and when they spoke to the 23-year-old noted his speech was slow and drowsy.

Kelly failed a drug wipe test and was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters where tests showed he was more than double the legal limit.

During sentencing, at Douglas Courthouse, Deputy High Bailiff Rachael Braidwood told Kelly: “You did seem to be visibly affected by the cannabis.”

She fined him £1,000 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £125; Kelly will remain disqualified until he’s taken, and passed, an extended driving test.
