Corlett wins Douglas council seat at first attempt

A clear winner emerged at yesterday's by election for the vacant seat on Douglas council.

Catherine Corlett took the St George's ward seat with a large majority, polling 274 votes, well ahead of her nearest rival David Buttery on 156.

In third place George Campbell attracted 93 votes and trailing in fourth place Kevin Oliphant Smith polled just 34 - both candidates failing to make headway in their third attempt to join the council.

Turnout was just 27 per cent.

Mrs Corlett who lives in Cronkbourne Road is making her first foray into politics.

She follows in the footsteps of her parents Glenda and the late Billy Corkish, both long-serving Douglas councillors and former mayors.
