Platinum event is two months away

Local authorities are being offered up to £5,000 in taxpayer backed funding to support events marking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The event is two months away with official celebrations taking place, over an extended bank holiday, from Thursday, 2 June to Sunday, 5 June.

A Platinum Jubilee Event Fund - offering one-off grants to help cover up to 80 per cent of costs – has been launched by the Isle of Man Government.

It aims to encourage local communities to celebrate what's being called a 'momentous occasion'.

But in the midst of a cost of living crisis some people on the Isle of Man have accused government of failing to 'read the room'.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan responded to that suggestion saying whilst government had worked to provide support to those affected by rising prices the event should still be marked:

Events which are eligible for support can take place until 30 September with up to £5,000 for local authorities and up to £1,000 for community and voluntary groups and local charities.

MLC Diane Kelsey says she believes it will be positive for the Island:
