Children to receive longer swimming lessons in shakeup of timetables

New timetable aims to enhance pupils' swimming proficiency with extended lesson times

The Department of Education, Sport and Culture has announced changes to schools’ swimming timetables.

From September 2025, 22 schools will move to a new programme offering pupils 18 lessons of 45 minutes each year, replacing the current model of 26 lessons lasting 30 minutes.

The change will result in children spending an additional 30 minutes in the pool annually.

Schools not implementing the revised timetable in September will adopt it from February 2026.

Government says the changes are part of a broader effort to ensure all young people in the Isle of Man become proficient swimmers before leaving primary school.

Education Minister Daphne Caine said: “By offering longer lessons, we can better support young people in developing essential swimming skills that will serve them for life. This approach allows for more focused learning and instruction.”
