Chief Minister reflects on VE Day

Nation invited to toast to the heroes of WW2 at 3pm

The Chief Minister has reflected on VE Day during an extraordinary time for the Island, and the world.

Howard Quayle gave an address at midday today, in honour of the Isle of Man's contribution to the war effort during WW2, on the 75th anniversary of the allies declaring victory in Europe.

A parade honouring veterans and current service men and women was supposed to take place in Douglas today, to recreate the one that occurred 75 years ago when the all-clear signal was given for the final time.

Mr Quayle thanked those who had organised the now-cancelled event, and explained how an alternative tribute is being played out:

The Island's emergency sirens will also sound for a final time at 3pm today (8 May) to mark VE day, before being replaced with the new emergency messaging system.
