Breast cancer charities to protest Tynwald over screening programme fears

Organisations 'joining forces' for demonstration on 18 March

The Island's three breast cancer charities are joining forces to stage a peaceful protest outside Tynwald next week, as questions remain over the future of screening programmes on the Island.

Concerns were raised following the publication of the Mandate to Manx Care, which highlighted proposals to change the frequency of screenings from two to three years.

The health body has been asked to follow any changes by the UK National Screening Committee, however Public Health Isle of Man stresses it hasn't 'recommended' any such moves at this time.

The charities - Breast Cancer Now, Manx Breast Cancer Support Group, and Isle of Man Breast Care - say 'these changes must not happen or we as an island will be facing late diagnosis, longer and more complex treatments and likely more lives lost.'

Demonstrators donned in pink are set to gather outside of the Legislative Buildings from 8:30am on Tuesday, 18 March ahead of this month's Tynwald sitting.

This week, Manx Breast Cancer Support Group called on the Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian to give a 'written guarantee' that no changes would be made to the frequency of cancer screenings.
