Biosphere photo captures Island's joys

A photo of children enjoying the sea and sunshine at Garwick Bay is to become the focal point of the Island's bid to win Biosphere status.

The image by Annie Eastham has been announced winner of a competition organised by the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture.

Annie's photo of youngsters from the Children's Centre enjoying a day out was selected from more than 250 entries.

Judges said it best captured the essence of what makes the Isle of Man a special place to live and grow up in.

A selection of the winning photos will appear in publicity material to support the government's campaign to be named a UN Biosphere reserve.

Reserves are designated by UNESCO, the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, to areas that balance the needs of people, business and nature

DEFA expects to submit its nomination to the UN body later this year.
