Bids invited for meat plant operation

Seven to table formal offers

Prospects for the Island's meat plant to be put in the hands of a private firm have moved a step forward.

Seven potential operators have come forward, after the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture asked for expressions of interest.

They will now be invited to table formal offers to run an on-Island slaughter facility, either at the existing Tromode premises, or from an alternative site.  

The plant is subsidised by government to the tune of £1.3 million per year - and with throughput of stock and local sales falling, that picture is set to worsen.
