Ban for mechanic caught drug driving on Mountain Road

25-year-old loses licence for five years

A mechanic from Port St Mary has been banned from the road for five years after being caught drug driving.

Police stopped Grant William Thomson, of Shore Road, on the Mountain Road just after 8.30pm, on 14 March, as part of a routine check.

But officers smelt cannabis and noted his eyes were red and glazed – they carried out a drug wipe test on his Audi which indicated a positive result for cannabis.

Thomson, who is 25, was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters where a subsequent blood test revealed he was 0.7 micrograms over the legal limit.

At Douglas Courthouse Thomson’s advocate confirmed it was his second conviction in 10 years adding: "The loss of his licence will have a significant impact."

Fining Thomson £1,000, and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £125, Magistrates told him: "This was a very serious misjudgement."
