Ayres nature reserve plans disrupted by continued pit use

Building waste facility was due to close in days

A charity is warning plans to open a nature reserve at the Point of Ayre will be disrupted by continued use of a tip in the area.

Wright's Pit North in Bride will remain operational in 2020, after the Department of Infrastructure failed to secure an alternative place to dump construction waste.

It has long term plans for a new site at Turkeylands in Malew, but couldn't find a suitable interim location.

Manx BirdLife says the prolonged use of Wright's Pit North will affect its plans to open the reserve, and wants to know about lorry movements and the types of refuse being dumped.

The conservation charity is aiming to protect the area to provide 'refuge and act as a way-marker to migrant birds each spring and autumn'

It's said the reserve could grow to more than 450 acres, and will offer a mix of freshwater and dry heath-land habitats.
