Anger and upset over Snuff the Wind closure

Move comes into effect on Monday

Government's decision to close an area surrounding old mine workings has been met with anger and dismay among the motorcycling community.

The spot at Cross Vein Mine in Foxdale, popularly known as 'Snuff the Wind', was seen as the last 'grass roots' spot in the Isle of Man where people, particularly younger ones, could ride and learn the basics of their discipline.

The closure, which comes into force from tomorrow, was recommended after a project to remove silt from Peel Bay Marina reportedly found a significant proportion of contaminants were linked with historical metal mining.

There's been much criticism of the move online, including from Manx enduro legend and multiple world champion David Knight, who said, 'Really handy, nowhere for kids to go and ride now'.

Meanwhile, Castletown Commissioner Jimmy Cubbon, who's involved with trials riding, has contacted DEFA political member Tim Baker MHK to express his concern about the move and the impact it will have, and has asked if anything can be done to mitigate it.

A group has also been set up on Facebook.
