Amber weather warning for flooding this evening

Due to come into effect at 9pm

The Isle of Man will be placed under an amber weather warning this evening.

Coastal overtopping and minor inner harbour flooding is expected between 9pm and 1am tomorrow morning (28 September).

It’s due to Storm Agnes which is causing gale to severe gale force winds.

These coupled with high tides will create large waves and lead to significant overtopping of sea water and debris onto exposed coastal road and promenades at around 11pm.

The areas most at risk are Shore Road in Rushen, Castletown Promenade, the northern end of Douglas Promenade and Laxey and Ramsey Promenades.

The Department of Infrastructure has delivered quantities of sandbags to the following locations:

Ramsey - East Quay by the Trafalgar public house

Laxey - Promenade, by the former pipe factory

Douglas - Strathallan Crescent

Castletown - Promenade, by Pump Station

Castletown Harbour flood defences have been erected

These sand bags are available for the use of members of the public with properties in areas predicted to be affected.

Those high tides will also lead to some flooding in inner harbour areas including the Tongue in Douglas and West Quay and Mezeron Corner in Ramsey.

Ronaldsway Met Office says flood defences need to be redeployed around Castletown harbour.

A yellow weather warning for severe gales comes into force at 2pm.
